The Southeast Georgia Alliance (SEGA) region boasts a rich history, stunning landscapes, and a thriving economy. At the heart of this economic vitality lies the logistics industry, a crucial player in the seamless movement of goods and services, and our region’s overall logistical advantages.
Southeast Coastal Georgia's location provides a natural advantage for logistics operations. The proximity to major ports, including the Port of Brunswick, the Port of Savannah – the fourth largest container port in the United States – and the Port of Jacksonville in Florida facilitates efficient transportation of goods by sea. Additionally, the SEGA region's well-connected network of highways, railways, and airports further enhances its accessibility, making it a prime hub for distribution and transportation activities.
The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) operates two ports on the state’s 100 miles of coastline, the Port of Brunswick, which is within the SEGA region, and the Port of Savannah, just a few miles outside the region.
The Port of Brunswick is currently the second busiest autoport in the United States. GPA is adding warehouse space and auto storage, a fourth berth, and near-dock storage to increase the annual capacity on Brunswick’s Colonel’s Island to 1.4 million autos and heavy equipment per year.
About an hour’s drive from the SEGA region, the Port of Savannah stands as a linchpin in the logistics landscape of Southeast Coastal Georgia. As the fourth-largest container port in the nation (ports in Los Angeles, Long Beach, CA, and New York/New Jersey top the activity list), it handles a vast array of goods, from containers and automobiles to bulk cargo. The port's deepwater access allows it to accommodate large vessels, ensuring a smooth flow of international trade. Its continuous expansion and modernization initiatives position the region as a pivotal gateway for global commerce.
Efficient logistics require robust transportation infrastructure, and the SEGA region excels in this aspect. Interstate 95 intersects in the region with I-16 near Savannah and 1-10 in Jacksonville, connecting the region to major cities and markets. The well-maintained roadways facilitate the movement of goods by truck, offering a reliable and timely mode of transportation. Additionally, the railway network, with connections into the ports, further enhances the region's connectivity.
The area has become a significant hub for air cargo operations. From international airports at Savannah and Jacksonville to the regional Brunswick Golden Isles Airport to smaller general aviation airports in the region, air cargo in Southeast Coastal Georgia plays a pivotal role in connecting the region to the world economy and fostering economic prosperity.
We like to say that the SEGA region is “total modal,” excelling at providing intermodal connectivity. The region's logistics facilities seamlessly combine ocean shipping, trucking, rail transport, and air cargo to create a comprehensive and efficient supply chain network. This interconnectedness enables businesses to optimize their logistics strategies, reducing transit times and costs.
The thriving logistics industry in the SEGA Alliance region contributes significantly to the area’s economic growth. The employment opportunities created by logistics operations, from port workers to truck drivers and logistics professionals, play a vital role in supporting the local workforce. Moreover, the increased flow of goods through the region stimulates business activities, fostering economic development and attracting investments.
Logistics in the SEGA region serves as a backbone for economic prosperity, leveraging the region's geographical advantages and well-developed infrastructure. The strategic combination of world-class ports and efficient transportation networks positions the area as a key player in the global supply chain. As the logistics industry continues to evolve, Southeast Coastal Georgia remains a beacon of success in navigating the complexities of modern trade and commerce.
