Healthcare

Access

With three respected hospital facilities in our six-county region, residents of Southeast Coastal Georgia have access to excellent healthcare. Healthcare providers of all types provide excellent, patient-focused service with modern technology at their disposal. From orthopedists to dentists and oncologists to pediatricians, and everything in between, the healthcare professionals are here to serve residents.

The largest hospital system and regional hub is Southeast Georgia Health System, a non-profit entity that operates hospitals in Brunswick and St. Marys and also provides quality care to communities in Brantley, Charlton, McIntosh, and Wayne counties. Southeast Georgia Health System in 2022 was named among the top 20 large hospitals in the state in Georgia Trend magazine’s annual roundup.

The health system’s two acute care hospitals – a 300-bed hospital in Brunswick and a 40-bed hospital in St. Marys – are accompanied by more than 50 physician practices and multiple specialty centers. There are more than 300 physicians on staff who represent nearly every major medical specialty. Specialties include The Orthopaedic and Spine Center, a cancer care center, The Miriam & Hugh Nunnally Maternity Care Center, The Senior Care Center, and numerous other outpatient and primary care facilities.

Southeast Georgia Health System offers its patients the most sophisticated robotic technologies in the region that help surgeons treat patients with the most advanced, least invasive, and most accurate methods available in medicine today. Robotic surgery services on the Brunswick campus include the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery system, da Vinci Robotic Surgery, and Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery.

Residents of Wayne County can depend on the care from Wayne Memorial Hospital, an acute care hospital accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Named in 2022 among the top eight small hospitals in Georgia by Georgia Trend magazine, Wayne Memorial provides emergency services, diagnostics, illness treatment, surgical services, and Level I neonatal care.

Our health systems have some of the finest physicians in the region, and residents also have access to health systems in Savannah, GA and Jacksonville, FL, which are within an hour’s drive for most residents.

Rural Hospital Tax Credits

Individual and corporate taxpayers who contribute to qualified rural hospital organizations (RHOs) in Georgia may receive income tax credits. Southeast Coastal Georgia’s medical centers are qualified to participate in the Georgia HEART Hospital Program to assist them with the marketing and administration of the RHO expense tax credit program. Together, these facilities and Georgia HEART are “Helping to Enhance Access to Rural Treatment.”

Since the tax credit was signed into law in 2016, Southeast Georgia Health System – Camden Campus and Wayne Memorial hospital have received more than $1.5 million in contributions. These funds have been used to provide needed equipment and facility updates and to attract quality doctors and nurses to the region.
