Forestry plays a significant role in the Southeast Coastal Georgia region, with sustainable timber production being a major economic activity in our six counties. Indeed, the farm gate value for timber in our region exceeds $67.8 million per year, and pine straw, an ancillary forest product, brings in $8.2 million annually. This industry serves as a vital source of employment and income for the local communities.
The forestry sector includes forest management and logging; bioenergy; lumber and wood preservation; veneer, plywood, reconstituted and engineered wood manufacturing; prefabricated wood buildings and manufactured housing; pulp and paper products; woodworking and paper industries machinery; furniture, millwork, windows and doors; and containers, showcases, partitions, and shelving.
Our region’s forests include pine, oak, and hickory, among other tree species. Timber companies and private landowners actively manage these forests, employing sustainable practices to ensure long-term productivity and conservation. Sustainable forestry practices such as selective cutting, reforestation, and habitat preservation help maintain the health and biodiversity of these forests.
The counties of the SEGA Alliance are major forestry and forest products producers. The region hosts several sawmills, wood product manufacturers, and pulp and paper mills, which transform raw timber into value-added products.
